Top places to visit in Ambon

Banda Neira

The historic capital of the Spice Islands, where nutmeg once reshaped global trade routes. Walking distance from the harbor sits Forte Belgica, Forte Nassau, colonial mansions, and nutmeg plantations — all remarkably intact and largely free of crowds.

Pulau Hatta

A small coral-fringed island southwest of Banda Neira with some of the most intact reef walls in Maluku. The drop-offs start shallow and plunge deep, with healthy hard coral coverage and frequent sightings of Napoleon wrasse and reef sharks.

Pulau Syahrir

Named after Indonesia's first prime minister, who was exiled here by the Dutch, this small island rewards snorkelers with pristine shallow reefs and a quiet beach that rarely sees more than a handful of visitors in a day.

Pulau Karaka

A tiny uninhabited island near Banda Neira fringed by clear, shallow reefs ideal for snorkeling straight from the beach. The absence of any infrastructure is the point — bring your own gear and lunch, and you may have the whole island to yourself.

Forte Belgica

The most photogenic Dutch colonial fort in Indonesia, rising dramatically on a hill above Banda Neira town with pentagonal walls and sweeping views of the volcano Gunung Api across the strait. Built in 1611, it remains remarkably well-preserved.

Forte Nassau

The older of Banda Neira's two Dutch fortresses, built in 1609 and sitting right at the harbor's edge. Less dramatic than Belgica but historically significant as the site where the Dutch East India Company established their grip on the global nutmeg trade.
