Kukang River Expedition: Day & Night Wildlife Cruise

A six to seven hour river expedition from Pangkalan Bun, run in daylight and again after dark to meet the wildlife of the Kukang River. The boat leaves in the afternoon and cruises slowly through mangrove and nipah palm, with a local guide reading the banks for silvery langurs, long-tailed macaques, stork-billed and blue-eared kingfishers, lesser adjutant, white-bellied sea eagle and brahminy kite. The first cruise runs from the landing at 15:20; at 18:00 the boat stops for dinner at a local restaurant, then returns to the water from 19:00 to 22:00. The night cruise targets the slow loris, the small nocturnal primate the river is named for, and the guide also looks for buffy fish owl, mangrove cat snake, dog-faced water snake and reticulated python. Departures run year-round, with pickup and drop-off in Pangkalan Bun by motorbike or car (20-25 minutes to the river landing). Private departures for one person or small groups, with larger groups available on request.
