Ijen Crater

About Ijen Crater

An active volcano famous for the blue fire phenomenon visible between 02:00 and 04:00 AM, when sulfuric gas ignites as it escapes the crater wall in incandescent streams. Sunrise reveals a jaw-dropping turquoise acid lake at the summit and the surreal sight of sulfur miners hauling 70kg loads on their shoulders up from the basin floor.

Getting to Ijen Crater

1.5-hour drive from Banyuwangi town to Paltuding trailhead, then a 2-hour moderate hike to the crater rim. Most operators depart 23:00–01:00 AM for the blue fire window. Gas mask mandatory above 2,300m — bring your own or rent at the trailhead.
