Ijen Crater

An active volcano famous for the blue fire phenomenon visible between 02:00 and 04:00 AM, when sulfuric gas ignites as it escapes the crater wall in incandescent streams. Sunrise reveals a jaw-dropping turquoise acid lake at the summit and the surreal sight of sulfur miners hauling 70kg loads on their shoulders up from the basin floor.

Menjangan Island

A coral-fringed island within Bali Barat National Park, reached from the Banyuwangi side via the Gilimanuk–Wedi crossing. Calm, protected waters, dramatic drop-off walls starting at 3 meters, and frequent reef shark sightings make it one of the best dive and snorkel sites in East Java.

Baluran National Park

Known as 'Africa van Java' for its open savanna landscapes and large herds of banteng (wild cattle), deer, peacocks, and — if you're early enough — leopard cat sightings. The Bekol savanna viewpoint at sunrise is one of the most underrated wildlife experiences in Java.

Sukamade Beach

Tabuhan Island

A small uninhabited island in the Bali Strait with crystal-clear water and healthy coral reefs rarely visited beyond local fishermen and snorkel day-trippers from Banyuwangi town. The water is calmer than the open-ocean sites, making it ideal for beginners.

Djawatan Forest

A surreal plantation grove of centuries-old trembesi trees with enormous aerial root systems that create a cathedral-like canopy. The mist that sometimes settles between trunks in the early morning has made this a cult photography destination, though it's easy to visit without the crowds by arriving at 06:30 AM.
