Surabaya to Labuan Bajo is roughly 1,500 km across open water. There is no shortcut, but there are five very different ways to do it, with very different price tags. This guide compares all five with numbers, so you do not pick the wrong one.
| Route | Duration | Rough cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct sea crossing | 30–36 hours | Lowest | Bringing a motorbike, tight budget |
| Direct flight | 1.5 hours | Most expensive | Tight schedule, no transit |
| Flight with connection | 5–7 hours total | Mid | Limited time, light luggage |
| Overland plus ferries | 4–6 days | Mid, flexible | Road trips |
| Packaged open trip | Fixed departures | Mid–high | Anyone who wants it handled |
1. Direct sea crossing
KM Dharma Rucitra, KM Niki Sejahtera and KMP Swarna Bahtera serve this route. Crossings take 30–36 hours depending on class and weather. It is the right choice if you are bringing a motorbike, carrying a lot, or on a very tight budget. The catch: it does not sail every day, and weather can delay departure.
Details are in Surabaya to Labuan Bajo by Sea.
2. Direct flight
Surabaya to Labuan Bajo with no connection takes roughly 1.5 hours, and it is the only option that genuinely saves time. It costs the most of the five, and the schedule is thin — not daily, and often a single departure a day. If time is tight or you are travelling with small children, this is the one that makes sense. The catch: baggage. Cheap fares usually include a small cabin bag only, and a Komodo trip almost always needs more.
3. Flight with a connection
Surabaya to Bali or Jakarta, then on to Labuan Bajo. Five to seven hours total including the layover. It often looks expensive at first and turns out cheaper if booked far ahead. Watch the baggage allowance: many cheap fares exclude a large cabin or checked bag.
4. Overland plus ferries
Surabaya–Banyuwangi–Bali–Lombok–Sumbawa–Flores. Realistically four to six days. This makes sense when the journey is the point, not just the way to arrive.
5. Packaged open trip
Transport, boat and guide bundled into one price. For many travellers a package is cheaper than assembling it themselves, because the return boat, accommodation and meals are already inside.
Which one I would take
- With family: the connecting flight, or the direct flight if the schedule and budget line up. The least punishing travel time for children.
- Backpacking: the sea crossing if the schedule fits, otherwise a flight booked well in advance.
- Bringing your own vehicle: the sea crossing. Nothing else is realistic.
- Short on leave: the direct flight. 1.5 hours versus 30 hours is not a close call.
Common mistakes
- Booking the boat too close to the departure date.
- Not checking whether the vessel actually stops at Labuan Bajo or merely passes through.
- Forgetting to price motorbike freight.
If you would rather see the options already bundled into packages, the list is on the Komodo experiences page.
